Celebrating World Environment Day- 2020 (Time for Nature)


A webinar on ‘Celebrating World Environment Day- 2020 (Time for Nature)’ was organised by the Northern University Environmental Club (NUEC) from the Department of Business Administration of NUB on the 22nd of June, 2020 at 11am.



A panel of subject field experts joined the webinar and discussed about the environmental impacts in the pandemic. Mizanur Rahman Bhuiyan (Chairman Nature Study Society of Bangladesh), along with AKM Masud (Executive Director Gram Bangla Unnayan Committee), Prof. Dr. Shafi Mohammad Tareq (Department of Environmental Sciences, Jahangirnagar University, Bangladesh) and Prof. Dr. Mohammad Ekramol Islam (founder and advisor of NUEC and Treasurer, Dean FoB of NUB) were the discussants of the webinar.


The webinar went live through the NUB Business School’s official Facebook page and was also shared in the official Facebook page of Northern University Bangladesh so that environmental enthusiast students and faculties from other departments could also participate and get enlightened by the session.


Mizanur Rahman Bhuiyan is Asst. Prof., Dept. of Biology, Notre Dame College at Notre Dame College, Motijheel, Dhaka, BD and also the Chairman Nature Study Society of Bangladesh. He has more than 23 years of experience in this field. He has done his MSc in Wildlife Biology from the Dept. of Zoology from University of Dhaka, Bangladesh.


A K M Maksud is the Founder and Executive Director of Grambangla Unnayan Committee. He has been performing this role since 1997. He was awarded ASHOKA Fellowship in 2006 from the ASHOKA Innovators for the Public, the USA for his innovating designing and implementation of an inclusive education program for the nomadic Bede community through mobile boat schools. A K M Maksud is a Member of National NGO Coordination Committee for Birth Registration of the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, The People’s Republic of Bangladesh. Maksud was the Member of Technical Committee of the National AIDS Committee and Secretary General of the STI/AIDS Network of Bangladesh. He is the lead/co-author of two books and 9 research articles in reputed journals. During his professional experience, he produced 48 research reports. A K M Maksud obtained his Master of Social Science (MSS) and Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from the University of Dhaka. 


Dr. Shafi Mohammad Tareq completed B.Sc. (hons) and M.Sc. from Department of Chemistry, Jahangirnagar University, Bangladesh. He obtained M.S. from Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Nagoya University and awarded B.Sc. from Graduate School of Environmental Studies, Nagoya University, Japan. Dr. Tareq also completed Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education (PGCHE) from the University of Nottingham and become a fellow of the higher education academy, UK. He is an Environmental Hydro-biogeochemist by training, and has been involved in multi-disciplinary research since 1995. In his early career, he worked as a JSPS post-doctoral fellow at Nagoya University and the University of Shiga Prefecture. He also worked as founder faculty and Chair, Department of Environmental Sciences, Jahangirnagar University and adjuct faculty at the University of Shiga Prefecture, Japan. He has collaborated several international projects between Bangladesh and Japan and worked as country leader of several international research consortium.



The panel discussed about how to go back to nature and start a normal life post Covid19. It was discussed that the balance of nature was disturbed due to modernization and urbanization and the pandemic could be one of the ways in which the nature is trying to fight back and regain balance. An enlightening discussion on topics like forest fire, various flu, global warming and excess carbon emissions was highlighted by the panel.  The panel also talked about the natural ways in which the nation is fighting the pandemic. The knowledgeable panel also talked about the waste management process, mainly on the context of Bangladesh. Some statistical data was evidenced by the panel while discussing in this context.  



Prof. Dr. Mohammad Ekramol Islam, showed optimism by highlighting some of the positive impacts of the COVID19. However, he also mentioned how the pandemic is affecting the lives negatively and how it could be changed. He concluded the session by showing his gratitude towards the panel for the informative and enlightening discussion.


Ms Mahbuba Sultana, Senior Lecturer at NUB was the host and moderator in the session.
